Deacon Laurel Deery
Rev. Laurel Deery has been married for fifty years, working and raising their two sons. She has always had an interest in and love of people from differing backgrounds and means. She taught math to children in grades 4-9 for twenty years. After retiring from teaching she followed a call to be ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church. After 13 years of ministry in churches on the North Shore of Boston, she retired from formal church ministry.
Laurel was involved in the community as a volunteer. She has served on the boards of non-profits and the Personnel Board of the town. She co-founded The Fund to Prevent Homelessness with a friend to assist working families who were facing eviction or foreclosure. She was part of the clergy group which began the Grace Center in Gloucester, a place where people could come for food, assistance and friendship when the shelters were closed. Coming to Common Art and common cathedral was a natural choice for Laurel.
